Sargassum is a kind of brown algae. It grows in the low tide zone of the rock or the rock with the depth of 2 meters to 3 meters. There are 250 species, most of which are warm water species, widely distributed in warm water especially in India, Western Pacific and Australia. China is one of the main producing areas of Sargassum with sixty species. It is abundant in the coastal areas of Guangdong and Guangxi, especially Hainan Island and Weizhou Island.

Sargassum is rich in seaweed polysaccharides, seaweed hormones and anti-biomass, and is one of the best raw materials for the production of seaweed fertilizer. So,What advantages does Sargassum have?

Advantage -1  Strong Vitality and Reproductivity

Sargassum is honoured as "Queen of Seaweed". It can grow up to 4 meters in length within half year with outstanding reproductivity, although Sargassum grow in specific sea area with relatively tough environments. Consequently, it shall insure the fast growth and development of crops when apply the traits on terrestrial plants.

Advantage -2  Abundant branches, Spores and high Cytokinin

Sargassum grow from October each year, and the whole plant will decay and disappear in the the sea on July and August of the second year as temperature rise, then leaving just a myriad of spores drifting with the current of the sea, and start a new life cycle at the right time. Sargassum has very much branches itself and high cytokinin content, thereafter, agricultural biostimulants made from Sargassum can help crops to grow more branches and fruits because fruits usually set on small branches of the plant.

Advantage-3  Rich in Rare Minerals

High alginate in Sagassum can absorb nutritions such as minerals in the sea. Recent study shows that the content of iodine and rare minerals in sargassum is hundreds times higher than the surrounding seawater. Compared with other common algal materials in the market, sargassum has 3.34 times higher organic K content, and 3.33 times higher Iodine content.  

Advantage-4  Rich in active substances such as algal polysaccharides, algal hormones, antibiotics and so on

Polysaccharides contained in Sargassum can help crops to resist infection of bacteria and virus, moreover, it can fend off parasites at a certain extent. Natural hormones can stimulate physiological activities intelligently, and improving resistance of crops to biotic and abiotic stresses. Compared with Ascophyllum, sargassum has 14% higher content of algal acid, 8.6% higher laminarin, 26% higher protein, and 1.07 times higher mannitol.
